Good Evening Marietta Family,
It has been a very different summer from any we've ever experienced, but we have used the time given to prepare for a school year that may also look quite different than any before. Knowing that it is the best way to deliver quality education, Marietta Schools is committed to providing face-to-face instruction for the 2020-21 school year in a safe environment for both our students and our staff. We are truly looking forward to school starting on August 13th! As this pandemic has proven to be an ever-changing situation, we are continuing our work with local health officials and our amazing staff on specific plans that will allow us to do everything feasible to keep our schools healthy and fully operational while providing a positive learning environment for our students. More specific plans will be released in early August so that we can make the most informed decisions based on the facts at that time, while giving parents and staff time to prepare accordingly.
To avoid unnecessary face-to-face contact, enrollment will be fully online this year. If you have not received a parent activation email, please email contactus@mariettaisd.org to update your information or contact your child’s site. Please include the names of all students and grade levels in the email. Online enrollment will be open soon! All cafeteria charges, library fees, etc. must be paid in order to finalize enrollment.
By default, all students will be enrolled as usual in the traditional in-person model; This typical educational model is what we believe to be the most effective means of educating our students; however, we realize that this model may not meet the unique needs of every child. For this reason, we are also working to finalize plans to offer a full-time virtual instructional model for qualifying students who will commit to at least a full semester of attending fully online. Parents need to notify their child(ren)’s site principal as soon as possible if they plan to request full-time virtual.
There will be no school supply lists issued for Marietta Schools. All school supplies will be provided by the district for grades Pre-K through 8th grade again this year. We continue to do this as a service to the community and to help limit sharing of supplies.
We unfortunately anticipate disruptions to our school year including the need for short and potentially long term closures due to COVID-19. Notice regarding closures and other important information will be communicated via our Marietta Public School app, Facebook page and automated call/text system. In case of necessary school closure, our teachers and staff will be prepared to move fluidly from in-person to online instruction at a moment's notice. To help facilitate online learning, devices are available to be issued to every student and hotspots will be available to enable internet access at home. We have also increased our WiFi capabilities to allow access from parking areas on campus after hours and during closures for those with limited reception in their area. More information regarding devices and free WiFi will be available in the online enrollment documents and our return to school plan released in early August. Teachers will begin showing students how to navigate the devices and the learning platforms during the first days of school and much of the in-person instruction will incorporate online learning where feasible so that transitions will be more effective.
Bus transportation will be available for students for the 2020-21 school year; however, social distancing on bus routes will be a challenge. We will assign siblings to seats together when possible and windows will be down to allow increased air flow. Buses will be sanitized after each route. We ask that if you have the ability to transport your child(ren) to and/or from school that you please do so to decrease crowding on buses.
Other ways we plan to protect our staff and students include frequent sanitation of classrooms & buildings, temperature screenings and encouraging voluntary mask usage. Any formal decisions regarding wearing masks will be made based on advice/mandates from state and local health officials and will be in the final district plan in August. Although we have stocked up over the summer, the district’s supply of disposable masks will be depleted quickly and it is impossible to know if more will be available. If at all possible, please be prepared to provide a mask(s) for your child to wear and practice wearing them often. Talk to your child about the importance of social distancing and proper hand washing. And as always, please do not send your child to school if they are feeling unwell or exhibiting symptoms of illness.
This year will no doubt be difficult and challenging to say the least, but with your help and patience we will navigate through this uncharted territory as smoothly as possible. Our final plan, which will answer more specific questions, will be released the first week of August. Until then, be sure you have downloaded the school app and have updated your email address for enrollment.
Thank you for sharing your children with us!
Brandi Naylor
Superintendent
