Construction

After weather and supply chain deliveries held up construction for a time, last Thursday, April 28, workers began pouring footings on Marietta’s new middle/high school facility, a welcome sign of progress for school administrators, students, staff, and other stakeholders.

Although recent rains were much needed, they prevented work, and will continue to be a factor until the core and shell of the building are complete.

“The good news is that we have had no accidents to date, are on budget, and on schedule for substantial completion by March 2023,” Superintendent Brandi Naylor told board members in their regular meeting held Monday, May 2.

Naylor also shared that three concrete pours are scheduled within the next week, weather permitting.

With footings complete, the next steps are the under-slab electrical work, a temporary partition and selective demolition of the existing gym lobby, and the Insulated Concrete Form installation.

“The ICF is interesting,” said Naylor. “The forms are Styrofoam blocks that will be stabilized with rebar and then concrete is poured directly into the forms to create the walls of the building. They fit together like building blocks and will be visible from the highway.”

The ICF walls go up prior to the pour of the slab. ICF is extremely energy efficient and reduces environmental impact, is wind and disaster resilient, is quieter, and allows construction workers to build faster, saving time and money. (Photo by Nate Jackson)
