Middle and high school students at Marietta Public Schools attended a Veterans’ Day celebration, hosting several veterans. Some of the guests were community members, but many were relatives of students.
“It was an awesome assembly,” said Middle School Principal Carrie Tucker. “Mrs. Sara Gore put it all together and she did a great job.”
Both band and choir students performed. Additionally, students had competed in an essay contest on the topic “What Freedom Means to Me.” Many students read their essays aloud.
Guest speakers were Master Sergeant Russell Snow and Captain Kyle Austin.
Gore said that organizing the celebration is important to her because it’s personal. Gore’s husband, Jim, served for 23 years.
“I want our students to understand the sacrifices our men and women in uniform make daily, what they miss out on when they aren’t home. They take the fight to the enemy so we can be free here at home,” she explained. “I want our students to understand why we need to be good Americans – because one day the torch will be passed to them. They have big shoes to fill.”
