Marietta’s high school Indians and Lady Indians were at Edmond’s Santa Fe High School on Saturday, September 25 to participate in the pre-state cross country meet.
“It was not our best meet,” said head coach Tanica Anderson, “but a race we definitely needed. We knew what to expect, but just didn’t execute as well as we should have.”
The Indians finished ninth in the 5K race of 144 runners. The winning time was 16:22.71.
Wyatt Vinson led the Indians, finishing in third place with a time of 17:24.30. Preston Eastmon came in 31st in 19:52.24, Charles Ayden Jones in 56th in 20:51.47, and Austen McQueen in 62nd in 21:16.84. Sergio Gomez rounded out the scorers in 78th place with a time of 21:50.75.
Will Laws finished in 82nd with 22:07.33 and Fernando Fernandez in 106th with a time of 26.45.62.
The Lady Indians fared better on the day, finishing in fourth place behind Regent Preparatory Academy with 39 points, Jay High School with 112 points, and Alva High School with 135 points. The Lady Indians’ score in the 129-runner, two-mile race was 150. The winning time was 12:14.49.
Scoring for the Lady Indians were Maddy Torres in 10th place in 13:33.99, Tanasia Randle in 22nd in 13:59.24, Rosio Castellanos in 32nd in 14:42.52, Timberly Riley in 41st in 15:06.64 and Alina Fernandez in 46th in 15:20.87.
Isabella Salas Garcia finished in 51st place in 15:31.73 and Brandy Palomino ended up in 84th place with a time of 18:26.73.
“Even though we didn’t place as high as we wanted to, we still had some kids improve their times,” said Anderson. “Now that we’ve seen pretty much all of our competition we’ll continue to move forward and get better. As a team we have to learn to push through and just keep fighting.”
The team has four local meets before the regional meet on October 23 and state on October 30.
