It’s time again for Marietta FFA’s annual plant sale.
“The kids have done a great job this year and we’re really excited about the sale,” said
advisor Kelsi Kamesch. “We had a few kids who returned with experience, but some
that knew nothing, and seeing them transition into being able to identify and care for the
plants had been great.”
The group started some of the vegetable plants from seed this year, so learning to
properly germinate the seed, getting it into soil, and then transplanting has been a
journey for students who are seeing the product of their own work.
For sale in this year’s sale are some veggies, as well as annuals and perennials – and
something new: mosquito repellant pots, which feature citronella-scented geraniums, a
cross between citronella and geraniums. The plants are scented like citronella but will
bloom like a geranium. The pots also contain lemongrass and lavender, all of which are
proven to chase away mosquitoes. Those plants will all come in one large pot.
The sale will also feature different arrangements of hanging baskets.
“The petunias were really popular last year, so we hit them heavy with several different
colors – pinks, yellow, purples and reds,” added Kamesch.
A variety of vegetable plants, including varieties of squash and tomatoes, will also be
available for purchase.
Another big hit from last year that will return is household objects turned into planters.
“We have several interesting planters,” explained Kamesch, “things like aluminum tubs,
old school chicken feeders, and tea pots, and at some point, we’re going to raffle off an
old school wheelbarrow and a couple of large tubs.”
The sale will be held on Thursday, April 10 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the school
greenhouse directly east of the ag barn.
