Katelynn McCarn Lewis was raised in Blanchard, where she graduated from high school
in 2017. She then attended college at East Central University in Ada where she earned
her bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education in 2021.
The next step in Lewis’s journey was a two-year stint teaching at Sulphur before joining
the staff at Marietta Public Schools. She’s now in her second year as an Indian,
teaching seventh and eighth grade Science.
“I’m a teacher’s kid and I practically grew up in a school,” laughed Lewis, “so I have
watched great educators at work for my whole life. I feel like I have always had the
calling for education.”
Lewis also coaches softball and girls’ powerlifting.
“Coach Lewis brings support and encouragement to her players. She’s especially gifted
at helping student athletes learn to cope with challenging times,” said Athletic Director
Tanica Anderson. “We’re glad to have her on our team and excited to see her continue
building strong bonds and helping our student grow and succeed.”
Like most educators, Lewis sees rewarding aspects of her job, along with some
frustrating ones.
“A source of frustration for me is how reliant students are on technology,” she said. “We
have spent a lot of the year working on research skills and productively struggling when
completing work. Being able to search the internet for any answer needed is handy, but
I feel as though they also still need to have the problem-solving skills to form their own
answers.”
However, Lewis believes that the rewards outweigh the frustrations, relatively speaking.
“I love seeing my students succeed, whether that is academically in the classroom, at
sporting events, or with anything in life,” she explained. “I enjoy getting to see the joys of
them accomplishing a goal they have set out to achieve. I love making connections with
my students and being able to be a positive influence in their lives.”
Lewis recently married and is now the mom to a stepson. Although she stays busy with
practices, games, and meets, when she does have free time, Lewis enjoys traveling and
spending time with family.
