The Marietta High School Indians and Lady Indians traveled to Marshall County to face teams from Oklahoma and Texas in the annual Madill Winter Classic, held December 5 through 7.
The Indians drew Ardmore’s Junior Varsity team in the first round. A big outing for Garrett Morgan, who scored 15 points on the day, helped to propel Marietta to a 52-46 win. Oliver Serrano had eight points and Tyler Hicks scored seven. Carson Pritchard, Brian Latimer, and Rafael Escobedo had six points apiece and Sethan Reed scored four points.
On Friday the Indians faced the home team. Marietta’s offense just never could generate momentum, having two quarters where they scored only three points, and Madill easily handled the Indians. The final score was 51-28. Morgan was again the leading scorer for the Indians, this time with nine points. Rafael Escobedo had seven, Brian Latimer scored five, Oliver Serrano had four points, and Carson Pritchard rounded out the Indians’ scoring with three points.
The Indians dropped another game on Saturday, this time to Dickson, and by a much closer margin. The final score was 44-34 in favor of the Comets in yet another outing when the Indians’ offense failed to generate much scoring. Oliver Serrano was the team’s leading scorer with 11 points. Garrett Morgan and Easton Hartman scored six points apiece. Corbin Griffith and Alex Amaya had three points apiece, Tyler Hicks and Rafael Escobedo had two points apiece, and Brian Latimer scored one on a free throw.
Coach Josh Drinning’s Lady Indians had a much easier time of it during the tournament.
Their Thursday opponent was Pilot Point, Texas. The Lady Indians escaped that contest with a 47-45 win. Yaslin Sanchez was the high scorer with 17 points, a career high for her. She had 13 rebounds, also a career high. Kaylie Douglass had nine points and three rebounds, Toriauna Douglass had six points and five rebounds, and Haven Matthews had three points and six rebounds.
Continuing in the winners’ bracket on Friday, the Lady Indians drew the home team Madill Lady Wildcats. Marietta came out on top in that contest by a final score of 50-41. Kaylie Douglass had 13 points and five rebounds, and Toriauna Douglass had 12 points, four rebounds and four assists. Yaslin Sanchez had eight points and nine rebounds and Haven Matthews had ten points and four rebounds.
The tournament finals on Saturday pitted the Lady Indians against the Dickson Lady Comets. This time, the Lady Indians would fall short, losing by a score of 51-37. Kaylie Douglass was the leading scorer with 13 points and eight rebounds. Yaslin Sanchez scored eight points and grabbed five rebounds. Haven Matthews scored seven points and had two rebounds. Toriauna Douglass scored three points, hauled in nine rebounds, and had four assists and five steals. Mady Hicks scored four points and had two rebounds.
The Lady Indians finished the tournament in second place and are 3-1 on the season.
