Marietta girls’ softball has a new face on the diamond this year, Coach Katelynn McCarn.
McCarn, a graduate of Blanchard High School and East Central University, comes to Marietta after spending two years at Sulphur. McCarn will have a lot on her plate, as she’ll be teaching in the Pre-K classroom along with coaching the high school softball team.
The Lady Indians have begun their season, and there are already a few players who are showing themselves to be team leaders.
“Jaylynn Hartman, our senior pitcher and leadoff batter, is a player who leads by example,” said McCarn. “She is always calm, collected, and ready to play.”
McCarn has also been impressed by senior Ashlyn Douglass Lucas, another senior leader.
“Ashlyn is coming back from an injury but is ready to get out and lead the team to some wins,” stated McCarn. “And Laney Hicks, an up-and-coming junior is just an all-around athlete. I could put her at catcher, short-stop, about any position and she is reliable on defense and a big hitter on offense.”
McCarn has set several goals for the team. It goes without saying that a winning record is one of those goals, but there are many more, and more important ones.
“We’re striving to put in the determination and effort to win ball games, but also to become better, more well-rounded athletes,” explained McCarn. “We’re working on accountability, on showing up ready to play every day and being willing to put in the work. We want to win games, but we want to become better players.”
McCarn has been impressed with her welcome to Marietta.
“Everyone has been great,” she said. “We have a lot of parent support, which is fantastic. This is a great program, and we’re working to make it better.”
McCarn is assisted with the high school program by Kenneth Barnes, while Tory Douglass and Savanna Whatley are coaching the junior high softball team.
